Samuel Routledge is a relatively new talent in Manchester’s heaving music community. The 22 year old recently played us some of his music for some upcoming sessions we’re currently editing against the backdrop of Manchester itself. Following this, we sent Samuel some questions regarding his work and his own interests within music…
Following a 2-month tour around the UK with Passenger, our good friend Stu Larsen is returning to Manchester with fellow Australian Bec Sandridge on September 4th and will be gracing The Bay Horse venue once again. For those down South you can also catch them a few days earlier, on September 1st, at The Hobgoblin in Brighton. Definitely not a gig to miss, so pen it in your diaries now!

Little Scream has announced a new string of UK and EU dates set for September of this year. The dates, see below, follow the release of Little Scream’s recent release The Golden Record, which has received notable praise from everyone including Q magazine to The Skinny.

We recently posted Passenger‘s new video for ‘Manchester’, and now we present our perspective of the day’s events. ‘Manchester’ was filmed around the city’s Northern Quarter which boasts a canal, aged, yet aesthetically pleasing, building facades and private car parks that you must ask permission to use for filming purposes first!
We were down in London last month and caught To Kill A King, amongst others, at Club Fandango. Here’s their deplorably good track ‘Family’ live.
Three piece Timber Timbre unveiled the video for ‘Bad Ritual’, taken from their self-titled album, on IFC earlier this week. The group have an overtly spooky feel about them, but said video has cranked up the spook to 11. When partnered with Taylor Kirk‘s husky voice and sharp piano melody, the video’s flickering aesthetic is reminiscent of recent works such as Michael Winterbottom‘s The Killer Inside Me and the film noir genre.

This Autumn, Timber Timbre will return to London on the 1st of November to play Union Chapel.
One of Canada’s great exports Bruce Peninsula are set to return this year with their second album Open Flames. 2009 saw the release of Mountain Is a Mouth, one of the best albums of the year in our opinion, and we’re hoping Open Flames ups the ante even more so.
Originally, a Spring 2011 release date was set for the album, but following Neil Haverty’s diagnosis with Leukimia, Open Flames was put on hold and the group chose to focus their anxious energy on project Bruce Trail Fire Sale until Haverty’s remission earlier this year. Open Flames will be released through Hand Drawn Dracula on the 4th of October.

The mighty BP choir has been replenished with the talents of Daniela Gesundheit (Snowblink) and Tamara Lindeman (The Weather Station) amongst others, and, with a Canadian tour on the horizons, it seems that all systems are go for Bruce Peninsula.

Earlier in the month, we spent some time with Stu Larsen and Passenger (Mike Rosenberg) when they hit Manchester on their tour around the UK. The day after the duo played at The Bay Horse venue, we helped out Stu and Mike with their video for the Passenger song ‘Manchester’, following Mike busking in St Anne’s Square in the centre of our fair city.
The video, shot around the Northern Quarter can be seen below, along with some photos of the process taken by Victoria Schofield, after the cut.

Bluesy four piece Kill It Kid are setting out on a UK tour this September, fitted around the release of their album Feet Fall Heavy on the 19th of the same month.
The album reportedly takes after the likes of Queens of the Stones Age and The Carter Family, and you can try single ‘Heart Rested With You’ (out on the 5th of September) on for size via the single’s video, below…

You’ve probably heard it from someone else, but Laura Marling is set to return to the stages of Britain this October in honour of her third album A Creature I Don’t Know which is released in September of this year. The stages will also rather brilliantly be within the Cathedrals of the UK, so be sure to wear your Sunday best.
Pretty much every detail of A Creature I Don’t Know has been revealed, and earlier this week the first single from the album, ‘Sophia’, was played on Zane Lowe. You can listen to ‘Sophia’ below…
The artwork for A Creature I Don’t Know is a departure from Marling’s previously amicable album covers, depicting what appears to be an entangled couple in monochrome that finds itself quite reminiscent of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s artwork.
